From Maonda to Jaipur: Satveer Saini’s Journey from Cricket Dreams to Television

Jaipur: For Satveer Saini, the road from the small village of Maonda in Neem Ka Thana, Rajasthan, to the television industry has been anything but smooth. It is a story shaped by determination, struggle and resilience, and it shows how a person can rebuild a career even after the original dream slips out of reach.

Saini arrived in Jaipur as a young boy chasing a cricketing future. Years later, after facing financial hardship, a serious accident and the death of his father, he found a fresh direction on television, working in both acting and assistant direction on well-known crime and drama shows.

Growing Up in Maonda With a Passion for Cricket

Satveer Saini grew up in Maonda, where he developed a love for cricket at an early age. His family faced financial difficulties. His father was a farmer who also worked as a labourer, and resources at home were limited.

The family did not own a television. Because of this, young Satveer would often walk to other people’s homes in the village to watch cricket matches. Those moments in front of someone else’s screen planted a dream in him: one day, he wanted to play the game at the highest level himself.

In 2006, he made the bold decision to leave his village and travel to Jaipur to pursue that dream.

Arriving in Jaipur With ₹5,000

Saini reached Jaipur with around ₹5,000 taken from his father’s pocket. With little else to rely on, he began visiting different cricket clubs in the city, hoping someone would give him a chance.

The biggest obstacle was money. Club fees were far beyond what he could afford. On several occasions, he could only stand outside the gates and watch other players practise. He recalls being stopped by security guards and asked to leave because he did not have the money to enter and train.

In those early days, Saini even spent nights on the pavement. Eventually, he found accommodation with a club groundsman and began working as a groundsman himself. The job did not pay him in glory, but it kept him close to the cricket ground and allowed him to continue chasing his goal.

From Groundsman to Under-19 Cricket

After spending around a year in this difficult phase, Satveer Saini appeared for an Under-14 trial and was selected. It was the first major breakthrough in his cricketing journey and proof that persistence could open doors that money had kept shut.

He later progressed to Under-19 cricket and continued his path through competitive cricket. His performances in domestic and local tournaments helped him gain further opportunities and exposure.

Ranji Trophy Squad and the 12th-Man Role

Saini later became associated with the Goa Ranji Trophy squad setup and was part of the team as a 12th man. He did not feature in the Ranji Trophy playing XI, but being around the squad gave him valuable exposure to the domestic first-class cricket environment.

During this period, he continued to play in domestic and local tournaments while working towards establishing himself at a higher level.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Opportunity

In 2012, Satveer Saini got an opportunity to bowl to the Sunrisers Hyderabad setup. After the session, he was given the chance to remain associated with the team as a net bowler. He continued to be associated with the setup in 2013.

For a young cricketer who once watched matches in neighbours’ homes and stood outside club gates, bowling in an IPL franchise setup was a significant milestone. However, his cricket journey soon faced another major setback.

Father’s Cancer, Accident and Loss

Saini’s father was suffering from cancer. When his health became serious, Saini returned to Jaipur to be with him. Around the same period, he was involved in a motorcycle accident.

The accident happened only a few days before the IPL, forcing him to step away from the team setup. Soon afterwards, his father passed away.

The loss brought additional family responsibilities at a time when Saini was already recovering from the accident and dealing with uncertainty about his cricket career.

Financial Hardship and Work as a Bus Conductor

With his cricket career interrupted and a family to support, Satveer Saini went through a difficult financial phase. To earn a living, he took up different jobs, including working as a bus conductor.

The work was a stark contrast to the cricketing ambitions with which he had first arrived in Jaipur. Even so, he did not give up. Despite the setbacks, Saini kept looking for another opportunity to rebuild his career.

A Facebook Connection Opens the Door to Television

The next turning point came through an unexpected source. A Facebook friend helped him come across an opportunity connected with Crime Patrol, and that opportunity opened the door to the television industry.

Saini subsequently worked in television productions in both acting and assistant direction. His television journey has been associated with programmes including Crime Patrol, Savdhaan India, CID and Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi.

A Journey Marked by Struggle and Resilience

Satveer Saini’s story moves from Maonda to Jaipur and eventually into television, with several difficult phases along the way. He watched cricket in other people’s homes, arrived in the city with ₹5,000, spent nights on the pavement, worked as a groundsman, progressed through youth cricket, became associated with the Ranji Trophy squad and earned an opportunity with the Sunrisers Hyderabad setup.

After his father’s illness and death, a serious accident and financial pressure forced him to look beyond cricket. His entry into television through a Facebook connection gave him a new direction.

His journey is a reminder for young people from small villages that dreams may change shape, but determination can still lead to new opportunities.
