Sensex opens 549 points higher as crude oil prices tumble

The Sensex opened 549 points higher on Monday, with the Nifty crossing 23,900, as crude oil prices tumbled 5 per cent.

The Sensex rose 549.21 points, or 0.72 per cent, to open at 76,608.98, while the Nifty gained 160.95 points to start at 23,928.40.

Both benchmarks had ended Friday at their lowest in over a month, with the Sensex at 76,059.77 and the Nifty at 23,767.45.

The rally came on the back of a sharp fall in crude oil prices amid easing tensions in West Asia, retreating from a two-month high hit last week.

IndiGo led the gainers on the Sensex, up 3.11 per cent, followed by Eternal, Infosys, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance.

The broader market also gained, with the BSE Smallcap Select Index rising 1.05 per cent to 8,677.49.
