After years of professional football and specialist coaching assignments across West Bengal, former goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh takes on a new role with Pune Pioneers FC.
The journey from professional footballer to coach is rarely straightforward. It requires a different understanding of the game, the ability to communicate experience and, above all, a commitment to helping the next generation improve. For Avijit Ghosh, that transition has become the defining chapter of his football career.
The former East Bengal FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC goalkeeper has joined Pune Pioneers FC as Goalkeeping Coach, bringing experience from professional football and a coaching career that began in 2017.
His appointment marks a new stage in a journey that has taken him from playing in some of India’s established football competitions to working with young players and senior club environments as a specialist goalkeeper coach.
A professional playing career across Indian football
Ghosh’s football education began well before his coaching career. His early club experiences included Site Athletic Club, SAIL Football Club and George Telegraph, before he joined Tata Football Academy, where he spent four years between 2003 and 2007.
The academy experience was followed by opportunities in senior football. He represented East Bengal FC in the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons, becoming part of a squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He was also part of East Bengal’s Durand Cup runners-up squad in 2009 and participated in the AFC Cup in 2010.
His subsequent playing career included Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.
At Royal Wahingdoh, he was part of the team that finished third in the I-League in the 2014–15 season. The club also finished as runners-up in the Shillong Premier League in 2015.
This playing background gave Ghosh exposure to different football cultures, competition formats and levels of the Indian game.
Building a coaching career from 2017
Ghosh began his coaching journey in 2017, focusing on goalkeeper development. His first recorded coaching assignment was with the Hooghly District Sports Association during 2017–18.
He subsequently worked in the Kalyani Football League in 2018–19 and with Kolkata Soccer Academy in 2021.
His coaching responsibilities then extended into several club environments. In 2022, he worked with Suruchi Sangha in the Calcutta Football League First Division. In 2023, he was involved with Khidderpore SC in the Calcutta Football League Premier Division and Kalighat MS in the Reliance Development League.
The 2024–25 period saw him work with two established Kolkata football clubs: City AC in the Calcutta Football League First Division and George Telegraph FC in the Premier Division.
In 2026, he was associated with SKM Sports Foundation in the AIFF U-17 Youth League.
The range of these assignments is an important part of his profile. His coaching experience includes youth development settings as well as teams competing in senior domestic football. He holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence.
The value of understanding both sides of the game
A goalkeeper coach who has played professionally brings a particular perspective to the training environment. Having experienced the position as a player, Ghosh understands the demands associated with competing between the posts.
However, coaching requires more than recalling one’s playing experiences. It involves translating knowledge into a learning environment that players can understand and apply.
Working across different clubs and competitions also provides exposure to players at different stages of their development. A young goalkeeper entering structured academy football has different needs from a player preparing for senior-level competition.
This makes specialist coaching an important part of a football academy’s overall development structure.
A new chapter in Pune
At Pune Pioneers FC, Ghosh will oversee goalkeeping development across all age groups, covering both the residential academy in Wagholi and the club’s non-residential evening programme.
The role gives him responsibility for working within a structured youth football environment, where goalkeepers at different stages can receive dedicated coaching attention.
The initial response to his sessions has been encouraging. Players have responded positively, and fellow coaches have observed improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.
Ghosh’s appointment also reflects the club’s wider intention to build a coaching structure that recognises the specific demands of different positions.
His move from Kolkata to Pune represents a significant personal and professional transition. His wife and young child remain in Kolkata while he begins this new assignment, underlining the commitment involved in taking up an opportunity away from home.
Experience put towards the next generation
From his early playing days in Kolkata to professional football with East Bengal and Royal Wahingdoh, and from his first coaching assignment in 2017 to his latest role in Pune, Ghosh’s career has evolved through several stages.
The appointment at Pune Pioneers FC brings those experiences together in a new setting.
For the club’s young goalkeepers, the opportunity is to learn from someone who has experienced the position as a professional player and subsequently worked in specialist coaching roles across multiple competitions.
For Ghosh, the challenge is to turn that experience into meaningful development for the next generation of Indian footballers.
